The Coneloc flange nut is an all metal prevailing torque type self-locking
nut. The advantage of using a flange nut compared to using a standard hex
nut is that the flange reduces the bearing stress on the joint. The bearing
stress is the result of tightening the nut. This can be of importance when
tightening onto aluminium and even mild steel using a high strength bolt. If
the bearing stress is too high, the clamp force can decrease because of
plastic deformation under the nut face. That is, the bolt can come loose
without the nut/bolt rotating. A washer used with a plain hex nut can also
achieve this but the washer should be hardened, commonly available washers
are not hardened. The Coneloc flange nut is our premier product and
eliminates the need for a washer.
The locking action on this nut is achieved by localised precision
deformation of the thread in the cone section on top of the nut. When the
nut is tightened onto the bolt, the thread is gripped on the flanks
providing the locking action. This nut is of property class 10 which means
that it is suitable for use with high tensile bolts of property class 10.9
and below. (That is, it can be used with property class 10.9, 8.8, 6.8, 5.8,
5.6, 4.8, 4.6 or 3.6 bolts.) The nuts meet the requirements of the BS EN ISO
2320 - 2008 standard (Prevailing torque type steel hexagon nuts - mechanical
and performance requirements.) We sell as standard nuts that are electro
zinc plated. As with other types of all-metal self-locking nuts, the nut can
be re-used and still maintain a locking action (meeting the ISO 2320
requirements). To achieve the full locking action of the nut it is
recommended that at least two bolt threads should protrude through the top
of the nut. Coneloc is a trade mark of Nuts Bolts Limited.
